September is just around the corner! This means we are back on stage on Sept 4 2024 to bring you more nerdy goodness!!!
We will be kicking off the harvest month with a bounty of knowledge to fuel your brains. Topics for September are:
Food Chemistry
Fractals
Dyslexia
#1 Food Chemistry with Emma Davy
“You are what you eat”: Have you ever wondered why your food and ingredients smell the way they do? Or how flavours are made and added to food products? In this presentation, I will outline how molecules make what we eat special – from the way they are structured, to the way they occupy space, to the way they react with their environments!
About Emma
Emma Davy is a Science Education Specialist and Honorary Lecturer in Chemistry at the University of British Columbia (cross-appointed with the Skylight Centre for Learning and Teaching). Emma’s background is in organometallic and physical organic chemistry having earned her PhD at the University of Victoria and time as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Ottawa. Since 2016, Emma has worked in chemical education as a teaching post-doctoral fellow and faculty member at Quest University Canada, a sessional instructor at Thompson Rivers University and the University of Victoria, and high school educator. Her teaching experience includes general chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and spectroscopy as well as a third-year course in communicating chemistry at UBC called CHEM300.
#2 Fractals with Ivan DeWolf
Ivan DeWolf is a classically trained artist and self taught software engineer. He has used fractals and the concepts to generate visual effects for dozens of feature films, and loves playing with infinity, geometry, and images.
This presentation is on how fractals can be constructed, and how infinity plays with geometry in some odd and fun ways. You should walk away with a better understanding of just what a fractal is, and how self similarity and recursion can create funny images from walking part way towards infinity.
#3 Dyslexia with Blake Mahovic
I’m Blake. I’m a Math and Special Ed teacher, rugby player, pub owner, and dyslexic. Join me to explore the Neuroscience of dyslexia, its history as a ‘disability’ and how it’s really a secret super power through personal stories and (hopefully) laughs.
